About Concorso d'Eleganza Kyoto 2018

Within the automotive culture of the West, there exists a century-long history of evaluating and appreciating the artistic qualities of automobiles, with cars viewed in much the same way that traditional handicrafts and works of art such as paintings and sculptures are. That this history exists is because the automobile has transcended its initial status as a vehicle merely for satisfying the desire to move, becoming the ultimate crystallization of technology and design in numerous fields, including engineering and body design. The culture of holding competitions around this craftsmanship and celebrating the most outstanding creations lives on in the automotive world today. This culture is one of splendor and tradition, and it provides the meaning behind the name Concorso d'Eleganza: Competition of Elegance.

Following in the footsteps of this Western history and culture, Concorso d'Eleganza was held for the first time in Japan in the fall of 2016 here at Nijo Castle, the former Imperial residence, where this event is set to take place once more. At Concorso d'Eleganza Kyoto 2018, the second edition of the event, a competition of artistry and magnificence will take place, with a special exhibition of automobiles of the most legendary status. To say that these are cars that even the most ardent enthusiast could go a lifetime without having the chance to see up close would be no exaggeration. They will include: a pre-war Alfa Romeo first owned by an aristocratic family with one of the most distinguished bloodlines in all of Italy, and a history that includes multiple Popes; a gleaming champagne gold Maserati, originally owned by the legendary Academy Award-winning actress Elizabeth Taylor; and an Alfa Romeo that has been designated a cultural property of Italy, brought to Japan from the Museo Storico Alfa Romeo (Alfa Romeo History Museum).

Here, legendary cars will be examined, and their great artistic and historical value will be presented for all to see. This will be followed by an award ceremony in which a variety of honors will be handed out.

Judging the cars will be a number of judges who have served at both the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este and the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, including the president of the Automobile Club d'Italia (ACI), as well as classic car journalists from Europe and the US. Additionally, everyone who attends the event between Friday, March 30th and Sunday, April 1st will also participate in the judging.
